R2W (Return to Work) Reloaded 2022

2020 marked the mass interruption of our daily lives in a sudden, unprecedented and global manner. Our digitally connected world has allowed many individuals and businesses to continue doing business and socialising, albeit from behind a screen, although on in an inequitable fashion due to socio-economic disparities and related access to digital tools. The economic and social impacts have been immense and we are still navigating our way through the many challenges that have arisen, with many uncertainties still at play.

While much may still be uncertain, we know that we need to keep various aspects of our lives functioning to the best of our ability, both personally and in our work, while reducing risks wherever possible. The world of work has had to adapt quickly, with much work continuing when compatible with work from home (WFH) strategies. Blended approaches to working were already commonplace before 2020, with many companies using flexible office solutions, hot desking, and remote working models. This meant that much of the required infrastructure and operational ability were in place to allow a significant shift to WFH activity for employees.

Work takes place in a number of environments though, from restaurants and warehouses, to malls and airports. Therefore it is crucial to consider the workplace in the broader sense, around the central theme of the office environment.

The questions that arise are how the physical office environment and other workplaces will be utilised in the short to medium-term, how much will return to business-as-usual-as-before, and what needs to change, as the world begins the process of returning to work. This workshop aims to answer these key questions by approaching them from various angles. Our expert speakers come from diverse backgrounds including design & architect, workplace strategy & facilities management, academia and corporate property advisory, which will enhance the multi-perspective approach we will be taking.

We look forward to unpacking what this all means for the workplace in 2021, by considering workplace strategy, design and management, as well as the psychological aspect of workers returning to the workplace with the pandemic still very much in our lives.

There is still so much to unpack, discuss and strategise around what will be a defining year for the workplace in its many forms and we have reassembled leading experts to give us their insight.

Professor Samuel Azasu

Samuel Azasu is an Associate Professor of Real Estate with over 19 years’ higher education experience in Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa. I took a sabbatical in Spain in my 20th year. I also have over 14 years’ experience organizing and managing curriculum redesign, quality control for regular degrees and executive courses in real estate in Sweden, the UAE and South Africa.

I have also done part-time work as an Associate lecturer with KTH Learning Lab in teaching curriculum design in Sweden. In addition I have organised and participated in training courses for university faculty in Sweden, Spain and South Africa.

Rosanne de Castro

Rosanne de Castro is the founder of Interior Design Workroom and a partner at Adroit Architects in Johannesburg. She has more than 20 years in design and construction having worked on many project types, both locally and internationally. Taking projects from concept through to completion, Rosanne focuses greatly on her client’s needs. She does this by exploring ways of creating increased happiness and improved quality of output – be it for a 5000 desk office or a single home office.

Rosanne has a great passion to propel our collective lives forward by creating thoughtful solutions in design that allow for inclusivity, especially in a country as unique and dynamic as South Africa. Rosanne’s knowledge of sociology and economics has rounded off her bouquet of services that she offers her clients creating a more all-inclusive approach to design and implementation

Andrew Mason

Andrew has over 35 years experience in the built environment which extends from starting his own Project Management and Building Surveying Company in the UK and South Africa, to Senior Executive positions at two of the biggest Facilities Management operators on the African Continent.

Andrew has a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Building Surveying, and became a Chartered Building Surveyor with the RICS in 1987.

He is the immediate past Chairman of the South African Facilities Management Association (SAFMA) and a member of the Institute of Workplace and Facilities Management. He is also the current South African Ambassdor for Euro FM

Patrick Katabua

Patrick is Account Director with Cushman & Wakefield | Broll at the Africa Desk based in Johannesburg. The role entails ensuring that client’s business strategy is met / enhanced through optimization of real estate. This could be in the form of Consultancy, Strategic Advisory, Market Research, Transaction Management (acquisitions, disposals, re-gears, etc…). Patrick is French and English speaking, and has over 10 years of Real Estate Experience covering African Markets

Patrick was previously Account Director and Assumed the role of Lead for French Africa territories at Excellerate | CBRE. Prior to this, he spent about a decade in Banking, focusing on Real Estate financing in Sub Saharan Africa.
